Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#2.%20Determine%20if%20your%20bug%20is%20really%20a%20bug.

In Unity there is no 'Desktop', so icons cannot be placed on the desktop.
This is by design

Thanks, so what is the purpose of this desktop? Can some applets/widgets be placed on it? ( like we can do it in activities in KDE4)

You can change the desktop from Netbook Remix to Gnome where you can place whatever you want ton the desktop.

When you login in, click the login name but before you type the password, there are options on the bottom of the screen. You'll see Netbook Remix, click on that and choose Gnome. Then type in your password and sign in.

From what I have understood and found, the desktop is for... the background picture and... nothing more! I think that the Netbook version is still in some kind of beta, with a desktop that is not complete. If it is complete, then it should be changed. But still, I can live without the icons. Didn't use them much anyways!
