Amazon App 12.10

Asked by Kenneth D. Rainey

I have been an Ubuntu user an evangelist for almost 10 years and an Amazon user and fan.  I own a Kindle Fire and buy a lot of stuff from Amazon.  I had high hopes for the Amazon app in 12.10 but it failed me.  Amazon marketing just tromped all over my system performance on the one computer, my netbook, where I left it ON after installing 12.10.  I had turned it off on my other machines.

I think I had the problem precisely because I do buy a lot of stuff from Amazon.  The browser kept reminding me of things I was looking for (like an electric generator after Sandy).  It was taking up a lot of real estate and I was getting the "Aw Jim, he's dead" page which I did not get with 12.04 and before.

Am I wrong?  Is there a cure?  I am still and will continue to be a fan of both Ubuntu and Amazon, but unless you can help me I will not use the app.

I suggest you report a bug. Using the app is optional.

If you decide to remove the app then you can do it from the software centre or in a terminal the command is

sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping

To report a bug the following command in a terminal starts the process

ubuntu-bug unity-lens-shopping

It sounds like you're experiencing performance issues on your Ubuntu system due to the Amazon app, and you're looking for a solution. While I can't provide real-time troubleshooting, I can offer some general advice and potential solutions that might help improve your experience:

Browser Extensions/Plugins: If you suspect that the Amazon app is causing browser-related performance issues, you might want to check your browser extensions or plugins. Disable or remove any Amazon-related extensions and see if that improves performance.

Clear Browser Cache and Cookies: Over time, a large cache or many cookies can slow down browser performance. Clearing your browser's cache and cookies might help. You can find these options in your browser settings.

Privacy Settings: Check the privacy settings in your browser and adjust them as needed. Some settings might be overly aggressive, causing issues with the Amazon app.

Browser Add-ons: If you are using a particular browser, check if there are any add-ons or themes that might be causing performance problems. Try using a different browser to see if the issue persists.

Update Your Browser: Make sure your browser is up-to-date. Sometimes, performance improvements are included in newer versions of browsers.

Amazon App Settings: If there are settings within the Amazon app, check if there are options to reduce the frequency of reminders or notifications. You might be able to customize the app to better suit your preferences.

Ubuntu System Monitor: Use the System Monitor tool (you can find it in the Applications menu) to identify resource-hungry processes. This can help you pinpoint if the Amazon app is indeed the cause of the performance issues. (Applied the same thing for my https://electriciandiary.com/ project)

Contact Amazon Support: If the issue persists and you believe it's related to the Amazon app itself, consider reaching out to Amazon support. They might have specific recommendations or updates that address the performance concerns.

Remember to always back up your important data before making significant changes to your system.

Can you help with this problem?
