"Unity Classic" for 12.10 and 13.04...

Asked by AG Restringere

Background: There’s a real need for a “Unity Classic” fallback desktop environment that can utilize Unity-2d/Qt/QML and can be run on top of the existing Ubuntu core. Increasingly I’m finding that Unity-3d/Compiz performance across various hardware is too unpredictable and uses too many resources on older machines making it difficult to use. The low-graphics LLVM raster fall-back mode for Unity-3d delivers an experience that is unacceptable for production use. Ideally Unity-2d would be the default Unity environment and Unity-3d/Compiz would be designated an "enhanced" version that users with newer GPU hardware could use optionally.

Question: Can you release a “Unity Classic” package for 12.10, 13.04 and future releases so that users of future versions have the option of having a fallback mode?

Hi AG Restringere,

My senses exactly !

First , here is not the right place for requests. Here we just solve problems (if any).
Second, I doubt if a unity-2d mode will be delivered in future. Ubuntu developers said that problems like that (performance ..etc) will be solved with the new Display Server (MIR). I hope , we'll see.

Last (but not least) , you can install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. It has the unity-2d mode and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS will be supported until April 2017.

This is spoken from my heart. Even if this is the wrong place, I like to support the said.
I have been using unity-2d ever since 11-04. Ever when I tried unity proper my ThinkPad became sluggish and heavy on battery. Also I like the look of 2d better as it has the right kond of modesty. With the latest updates unity-2d is a dream and I sincerely hope, that MIR together with QT will bring these qualities back to Unity proper.
