Reprogram Touchpad on Laptop to act as Spacebar

Asked by Saul Lubkin

Hi!

I have an Asus Laptop running Ubuntu 14.04. I have a USB mouse connected. I've disabled the Touchpad Mouse, using
Settings->Mouse and Touchpad.

I'd like to reprogram the now defunct Touchpad to act as a spacebar.

Can this be easily done?

Hi actionparsnip!

Unfortunately, I was less successful than I thought in disabling the
touchpad on my Asus laptop.

Whenever I close the laptop and reopen it, the touchpad is active again.

Is there any way to permanently disable the touchpad --perhaps in the BIOS?
