Switching to Ubuntu Studio from regular Ubuntu

Asked by Case Kennedy

First of all I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux...however I am a long time computer user so not a total newb but this Linux stuff is definitely a new challenge.

I have a perfectly working system and am in the process of learning more and loving it so far. However I am a musician and am attempting to setup a digital audio recording system. I have an extremely finicky soundcard and it took quite a bit of doing to get it configured right, I am using the E-MU 1212m Pci card and am routing all everything through a Behringer Xenyx 802 so far so good.

My question is this...I have been looking long and hard at Ubuntu Studio and am considering switching over to that platform. Is there an easy way to go about this...in other words just upgrading from my current version or is this something that needs a complete fresh install. Also what would other benefits be to switching to Studio? From what I have found it appears that this package is developed to specifically allow for low latency when working with audio systems.

Again as it took forever to configure this audio card I am a little gun shy to do anything at all as things are working nicely now. If I do upgrade or switch will I have to do all of the recompiling and updating that I had to do to configure the card in the first place.

Any tips or advice would be highly appreciated.

According to the Ubuntu Studio documentation, it is possible to "upgrade" an existing Ubuntu installation to be Ubuntu Studio:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ubuntu%20Studio%20Upgrade%20from%20Ubuntu

If you use that method, then you will probably not have to compile drivers again to get your sound card working.

You may want to consult the documentation (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio). You should also be aware that Ubuntu Studio has its own support resources (see http://ubuntustudio.org/support).
