Will all old wallpapers be added to the wallpapers-extra package?

Asked by anthropornis

I just discovered the ubuntu-wallpapers-extra package in Natty today and really appreciated that. I did note that the package details said that for now only Karmic wallpapers are included.

So I was wondering what the plan is for this package in the future. I am hoping that eventually, all old wallpapers will go into this package whenever a new version of Ubuntu is released, going back to the very first Ubuntu release. Ideally that would include default wallpapers as well as other wallpapers packaged for all previous Ubuntu versions.

Or if that would be too much, maybe all default wallpapers for prior versions could go into one "extra" package and the additional wallpapers packaged in all older Ubuntu versions could go into a second "extra" package.

Maybe GDM and/or boot splash stuff could go into additional "extra" packages as well, but if I had to choose, I would love to just have all the old wallpapers available.

Thanks for any feedback.

I've seen that, but it doesn't include all the extras from Karmic, for example. Plus it contains many non-Ubuntu wallpapers.

As far as manually installing things goes, this site seems more complete, though the images don't seem to be available in multiple aspect ratios:
http://ubuntu.ecchi.ca/wallpapers/

I think if they were maintained in one or more "extra" packages in the official repository, they would be more discoverable, easier to install, and more reliably available. If any details of the file system hierarchy changes from release to release of Ubuntu, I think that would be more transparent to an end user if the wallpaper archive is maintained as an official package.

I'm lost. I think you're question was answered, so what exactly are you looking for?

If you're waiting for a package to get added, then this is the wrong place for that.

Wishlist or Brainstorm are the places to discuss new packages

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Ubuntu/Wishlist

Good luck.

Someone posted a link to something else. I am afraid I don't understand how that answers the yes or no question of will such and such be added to existing package in the future. I feel like I am speaking a foreign language.

As I stated, this is not the correct forum for your question. We do not look after what goes into building ubuntu here, just helping users work with it by answering their questions. The above links I posted ARE the proper place to make such requests.

You can continue to ask here, but you likely will not get an answer.

Okay maybe I am confused about something here. I am not trying to be a pest, but I am not able to wrap my brain around what this section of Launchpad is for.

As there is a plethora of seemingly competing and overlapping (or even redundant) sites to ask various questions about various aspects of Ubuntu, and I thought this particular place was to ask questions directly to the maintainers of the package itself, who is this Answers section of the site for? If you look up a specific package on Launchpad, and then click over to the Answers section, is that a medium for talking to the package maintainers, or to someone else? Or is that even codified, and really just dependent on the specific package and the community around that package?

(I know in the past, with packages other than this one, the package maintainer(s) responded to the Answers section for their particular package, so perhaps that gave me false expectations. As an example, I have seen questions about the Weather Indicator package answered in its home on Launchpad.)

Could you give me an example of a question that would actually be suitable for the Answers section for this particular package, so that I might form better expectations of either the Answers function on Launchpad in general, or the Answers section for this specific package, if its maintainers deviate from other package maintainers on Launchpad?

Honestly pests like you are welcome :)

Seriously, you can ask anything here. That's the whole purpose here; you ask a question, hopefully someone provides an answer. But that's it.

Sometimes maintainers and developers will respond but it should not be assumed that they will, many of us are just here to help as best we can.

Cheers.
