Missing Ubuntu Power-on Sound

Asked by Tadhg McSherry

I recently successfully upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 from 11.04 and also upgraded the bios on my Dell Inspirion 1720 but I do not get the introductory Ubuntu default sound on power up. This is not a major problem and I have checked that the sound is'nt muted etc. I have no problem with sound on any multi-media apps like Banshee or playing movies on VLC etc. I am wondering is the cause from the bios upgrade or from one of the many updates I have gotten since moving up to 11.10? The bios update installed perfectly and my boot up time is very quick now, so the only problem is the Ubuntu sound. I have checked all the sound settings and they have passed the speaker tests etc. Anyone help? Thank You.

Thanks Andrew, but this did not work, does not like the word ubuntu, says it is invalid. One thing I have noticed subsequently though is that it is just for my own login that the Ubuntu sound does not play. I set up two more family members on this computer and the Ubuntu power on sound plays for them. Must be something about my account. It played for me yesterday when I got another user to delete my account and set me back up again but today it has failed to play the sound when I log back in. The help suggests that I can tick or untick a box in the user settings to turn on or off the intro sound but I cannot see this anywhere. Not a serious problem but it would be nice to find out why this happens. Any further help would be appreciated. Thanks.
