where to get advance streaming for ubuntu linux

Hi

I am new to linux and just learning. I tried to play a movie DVD last night and it didn't work. Just now I tried to download an email that my friend sent me and it did not work. I got a box saying that I need advance format streaming to see the attachment.

My question is, where do I find and download it ( advance streaming ) and how do I go about getting a movie player so I can play DVD's on my computer?

I sincerely would welcome the help as I said I am brand new to linux.
