What application are you trying to run in WINE? Not all applications run. Some won't even install. It's a mixed bag.

How did you install Chrome?

What was the previous version, what do you have now?

Are there any error messages shown when you try running chrome or Firefox?

I was running 16.4 and earlier versions, the last update for 16.4 killed
several things on my computer, video was a problem, but that was ok with a
work around, but the latest 18. killed everything and made WINE a program I
use all the time to fail completely and chrome also failed.

Why are you using Chrome in WINE when a native application exists? It's absolute nonsense.

If you run:

rm -rf ~/.config/google-chrome
rm -rf ~/.cache/google-chrome

Then launch the Chrome browser does it run OK?

Try enabling fewer extensions as well. You may just have a bad extension installed. The two commands will reset the browser to defaults. You can do the same with Firefox with:

rm -rf ~/.mozilla

I assume you don't use Thunderbird as your email client. If you do then do NOT run that command as it will delete your emails and the settings for Thunderbird as well.

You can then run Firefox and get a vanilla session.

Does this help?
