Unable to log in to general ubuntu desktop since upgrade. Only able to log in to XFCE desktop

Asked by Aldo

I was using gnome fallback with compiz. Now I can't log in with that either. Or any of the other desktops apart from XFCE. Have tried deleting all of Compiz and a few other applications that were throwing error messages, but nothing has worked so far.

Was it an upgrade to 17.10 that caused the problem or were you on 17.04 and then updated to 17.10 and then you saw the issue

@Actionparsnip, the output of sudo lshw -C display is:

  *-display
       description: VGA compatible controller
product: 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 2
       bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
       version: 09
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
       configuration: driver=i915 latency=0
       resources: irq:26 memory:e0c00000-e0ffffff memory:d0000000-dfffffff ioport:3000(size=64) memory:c0000-dffff

I updated from 17.04 to 17.10.

Still unable to log in, apart from with XFCE. Should I do a fresh install?

Thanks
