Distro upgrade from 15.04 to 15.10 completely failed. System is not accesable, blanc screen

Asked by Seb

During the Upgrade to 15.10 my PC froze with only the wallpaper on the screen. No Unity or so.
Also was there no HDD activity for over an hour.
I rebooted and the system came back partly showing 15.10 but login stated 15.04 and the kernel was still 3.19.
After using the following commands:

sudo apt-get update && apt-get distro-upgrade the system complained that something was wrong and advised dpkg -a or something to repair broken packages.

then it went on updating everything but not cleaning up. Have now 30Gig extra on HDD or so.
After reboot the system seems to boot but goes to blanc screen.
NumLock and Caps lock do not respond.
ALT+CTRL+F1 or F2 are not available.

Please advice?
Do I need to reinstall the system?
Cannot deliver any logs or so as the system is not accessible at the moment.
Am downloading the live CD to gain access to the system.
Thanks in advance

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

Thank you Brian for your answer.

I'm up now with the old kernel 3.19. The 4.2 will just not work.
Is there a way to reinstall the kernel?

Also is the problem, that because of the crash of the Ubuntu distro upgrade, the ditro upgrade did not really finish and now I lost a lot of disk space and don't know how to clean that up, also do I not know if all is done that should be done.

I found finally the reason and indeed, the FGLRX drivers are not working with kernel 4.2.
Hope they fix it soon as my War Thunder addiction is put on hold now ;)

After deinstalling the fglrx-core and so, the system boots normal.
There are still other minor problems like, Conky not working.

As Ubuntu will not work because of propriety drivers, this ticket will be closed.
