I have ubuntu 12.04 LTS server

" gedit /etc/hosts" says can not display so i used nano in sted of gedit. witch worked out till i typed "uposrf_ctl.sh -l -a start_all "

and i get Could not open TCP socket to "Jabber server: IO::Socket::INET: Bad hostname 'private.localhost" what can i do to fix it.

Use:

gksudo gedit /etc/hosts

Sounds like you have changed the hostname in /etc/hostname and the system cannot resole its own name to 127.0.0.1

Are you connecting via SSH? If so then connect with:

ssh -X username@server

i'm setting up evergreen so i can connect to a server
