As an Ubuntu user do I need virus protection, firewall etc? If so can you point me in the direction of where I can find the software I need?

No. Even if you install a Application through wine you still won't. << Must be verified (.exe)

You don't need a firewall as ubuntu has one already, and there are no viruses for linux so you don't need a virus scanner.
