Lost GUI - How to get it back? May have deleted packages!

Asked by pradeepthomas

While trying to reinstall evolution as the 'Trash' would not delete. I have accidentally uninstalled packages. Now the GUI is missing, I am left with a DOS prompt panel on logging in with no GUI. How can I restore the OS to GUI? I use Uuntu 10.04 along with XP.

Thanks

Hi ,

maybe this is an "opportunity" to upgrade to the newest LTS version ? :-)

Ubuntu 10.04 is supported , but will be EOL in a few months.
More info for Ubuntu releases here : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS will be supported until April 2017.

As for your problem , boot from recovery mode and try to use the option DPKG - REPAIR BROKEN PACKAGES.

Thanks

Thanks NikTh ,

I have tried 12.04LTS on my system earlier but it did not work well, so , I
have been sticking on to 10.04 which has been nice.

I tried your suggestion, but it does not seem to work as, my net connection
is a password based one on an http page, here ubuntu is not able to connect
to get the necessary upgrades.

Thanks for trying to help.

What was the problem with 12.04?

10.04 support will run out in April so you will have to update at some point. It may be that all you need to do is install "Gnome Classic" or that Xubuntu or Lubuntu would be better for you.

Thanks zavcet,

Your suggestion solved the GUI problem. The desktop is restored ! But
the download needed verification, on answering 'Y' the packages would
not download. But on giving 'N', the evolution packages downloaded and
the desktop was restored, but the 'Trash' in the Evolution mail cannot
be deleted/expunged. Can you suggest what could be done to have he
evolution mail functioning properly with proper mail protection?

Thanks
