Log in screen loads but not the "Desktop"

Asked by Damon Campbell

To start off i am a Windows user that recently switched to Ubuntu 12.10 due to a windows partition corruption. I have installed Gnome and when i restart and get the new Gnome log in screen, I am able to log in but when i log in nothing loads, only the background loads. The only session that i can log into that i get anything other than the background is the Media one, (I forgot what it is called). I thought about resolving my problem by uninstalling Gnome but I cannot uninstall it from the media session.

My log on session options are:
The Media One (The one i forget the name of) ***Again this is the only one i can get to work.
System Default
Gnome
Gnome Classic
Gnome Calssic (No Add-on's) or something along those lines
Ubuntu

What i am asking is how i can fix it to where i can use Ubuntu again. Even if i have to uninstall Gnome that is fine.

Any help is appreciated, and sorry if my terminology is wrong or confusing.

Thanks,
Damon Campbell

Ubuntu 12.10 comes with Gnome by default, what did you actually install?

I believe it was Gnome shell but im not sure. I have decided to go ahead and do a clean install of Ubuntu. I didn't have any files on it yet anyway. But thank you for your fast response to this matter.
