Why did you install the server, the desktop comes with a gui preinstalled, to get a gui try running sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, restart to test. If the gui does not start autimatically try sudo startx

The server edition is intended for server applications and does not have a gui because it is expected not to have anybody sat next to it most of the time.

You could install a gui desktop on the server and if you want we can tell you how but I suggest you install the desktop version as you don't want the server stuff and you probably do want not only the desktop gui but all the applications that go with it.

You will find the latest here.

Personally I would go with the 32-bit edition unless you need the extra power of the 64-bit. The problem with the 64-bit is not as many peripherals are supported so you are more likely to have trouble finding drivers for everything.

Make sure you check the MD5sum to ensure the download has no errors the burn the disk as slowly as you can

Install lxde and lightdm and you will get a lightweight desktop

In future, if you need a desktop OS, install the desktop OS, that is why there are 2 separate ISOs. You are able to run server like services on the system if you use the desktop OS, there is nothing preventing you from doing this.

I'd say the difference is negligible. The server kernel may be optomized for background services rather than foreground ones like on a desktop OS but you can install the server kernel on the desktop OS if you desire.

Installing LXDE and LightDM will give you a desktop OS and a login screen.

Can you help with this problem?
