tutorial gnome 3.4

Asked by Dr. L. J. (Sam) Bledsoe

I just upgraded to Precise Pangolin and my desktop is now bare (same old wallpaper) except for links to gedit, Terminal and Google Earth (!). Where is everything? I'm lost-- did I miss something in the upgrade?? There were a few cryptic messages which I saved, like-- "Customized cupsd.conf configuration file-- replace it?"
--yes
--was that a mistake?

and "services to start for upgrade:
rsync cups cron atd"
--I didn't start anything??

Help! --sam

My only session options on login are Recovery Console, Ubuntu, Ubuntu 2D
and User Defined...
Do I need to configure something?

Compiz seemed to not be working-- tried a restart and got a series of warnings concluding with:
"compiz (core) - Warn: unhandled ConfigureNotify on 0x3c000a4!
compiz (core) - Warn: this should never happen. you should probably file a bug about this."
--tried to research the bug in Ubuntu/support but found nothing

Then the keyboard ceased to function-- rebooted, the mouse didn't function, rebooted and...

...everything seems to be working now-- the launcher reappeared--, though the new look will take a little learning.

Thanks much to everyone (actionparsnip, NikTh) who tried to help-- I'll probably need it again!

After upgrading to 12.04 I experienced quite a series of failed or faulty restarts, each one requiring a reboot-- perhaps this is normal behavior, but ultimately my machine seemed to settle down. Maybe other users will appreciate the advice to keep trying reboots when wierd behavior happens after upgrade??
