No screen shown

Hi,
I installed 12.04 and here is the problems.
The left menu is only showing text?
Once in an application (ex writer) I don't see anything happening on the screen while typing?
I can't have access to the menu content - if I want to modify parameters, it doesn't show anything?
Help me plaese

I tried reboot a few times - nohing changed!!!
My version is 12.04 I don't know what version and how to get it

Before you log in, click the Ubuntu icon near your username and select Unity2D session and then login

I reinstalled in English - previous was in french -
and it works fine, I find it a bit slow but it does the job
