Sorry Peter,

but your system is too much oldschool.

Ubuntu8.04 has reached End Of Live long ago and there will be surely no one put hands on this problem.

The solution for you is :

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

please download from there the 64bit version of Ubuntu12.04, burn it and install it to your system(easy, choose the default option that the installer gives to you).

I have just checked the dell page for your computer(nice thing) it has an atom CPU which should support 64bit.

Please close this here as solved.

It's not EOL on the server but as the system is a laptop I'd safetly bet its a desktop OS.

I suggest a clean install of Precise, not only is it the latest stable release but it is also LTS so is supported on the desktop all the way til 2017.

Thank you for all the advice. Luckily, I was able to restore my system with the DVD supplied and a borrowed USB optical drive. I will also investigate the options you have given me when I feel the need for an upgrade of my little netbook.
