OS won't load 11.04, can't get to my system

Turn computer on,the top of the screen reads grub GNU GRUB VERSION 1.99~rc1-13 Ubuntu Dell XPS 410
Windows selection . Need to recover data that is on desktop.

Why do you not have a backup!!? If your drive's IDE fails and the device is not detected in BIOS, where is your data!!?

You can boot to the liveCD, chroot and repair Grub. OMGUbuntu has a guide entitled 'Sticking it to grub'. You can use the same LiveCD to do what you should have done a long time ago and take a backup.

If you had a backup you wouldnt even have had to ask this question. Youd just reinstall and restore the data...
