Use QWERTY keyboard for German in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Asked by Johann W. von Krause

I use a Laptop with a QWERTY keyboard, but I frequently have to work in different languages. Until the last Ubuntu version this was no problem. I could install both German and English, and I could also opt for having a keyboard with the German ä,ö,ü ß but still have QWERTY. Now this option is not available. When I switch to German as input language, I only have a QWERTZ layout available. How can I get that old option of choosing between numerous keyboard layouts back again? (And I am not willing to do do any programming, I am only a user.)
