where is the volume control icon?

The volume icon has disappeared. It was at the bottom of the page. It is nol longer visible. I am new to using a Linux operating system.

For Ubuntu running Unity please open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Enter:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get indicator-sound

Indicators are displayed on top panel.
