want to change unity look of 12.04 to ubuntu classic 9.10...

Asked by philip brady

... remove launchpad and use the older drop down menu.

Just installed 12.04, don't like the launchpad on left, can't find lots of things, like how to add more users, system monitor, etc. really liked older 9.10 drop down menus of applications, places and system.

also my children are young and like clicking on stuff, so i like to have nothing on the desktop, the launchpad is just too attractive to young eyes

or install the xfce4 package, log off and log in to the xfce session

Could I suggest that you live with 12.04 for a week before deciding? It takes a while to get used to the very different way of working, but it is fantastic once you persevere. The Launchpad can be made to autohide using system settings->appearance and the reveal sensitivity can be set really high so the kids won't find it. The Super key (once called Windows key for come arcane reason) reveals the Unity Lens. Start typing what you want into the searchbar and it's quicker than gnome menus ever were! But if you like the gnome style menus, click on the Apps icon (bottom of lens, second from left). Then click filter results .... prepare to be amazed. I could say a lot more, but please have a go with it before breaking a good system. Press and hold Super key for a whole lot of permanent shortcuts.

I'd let them stand, you could delete the .desktop file in the xsessions folder but updates will probably just put them back. They don't hurt
