CTRL+A (select all) does not select all in the address field of any internet browser

Asked by Daygan

In the address field of Chrome, Chromium, and Firefox, when I click my mouse in the address field of the browser, and press CTRL+A, the curser goes to the [HOME] position, and the address does not get selected. In fact, I have also found that this is the case in nearly any data-entry field in all internet browsers. Seems like a bug to me, but I just wanted to check and make sure this wasn't intentional for some reason before I reported it.

Hello Daygan,

if I use option ctrl+a it works fine for me. Maybe you have changed configurations for using shortcuts on keyboard. Check it out, this might solve your problem. I think, that this is not a bug.

Regards,
Miha

I actually can't find a "select all" option anywhere in the keyboard shortcuts, so I don't know how I would check this, but ctrl+a works as a "select all" shortcut for everything else, and in fact also works on a browser page, just not when the cursor is inside a data entry field.

What are your thoughts? Should I still check for an altered setting in my keyboard shortcuts? If so, where would I find it, exactly? How might I reset my keyboard shortcuts to default?

Yes, ctrl + L works for me as well, but ctrl + a SHOULD select everything in whatever field the cursor is in. In my case, it does not, so this is either a bug, in which case I will create a bug report, it it is a case of incorrect configurations somewhere in my own system.

ah-ha! now we're getting somewhere - in guest session, ctrl+a works fine. In my personal account, both 2D and 3D have the same problem. Any idea how I might determine where the source of the problem is?

Oh... I just figured it out - in advanced settings, I recently changed the keybinding theme to emacs, not really knowing what it would do, just as an experiment. I reset it to default and now ctrl+a is working just fine.

Well that's where #3 mozialla.support pointed to.
< .... When an Emacs text editing shortcut conflicts with the default shortcuts ... the Emacs shortcut will take preference if focus is inside a text box (which would include the location bar and search bar).>

You are correct. I actually didn't get past "This is a list of keyboard shortcuts" on that page, because I wasn't looking for keyboard shortcuts, I was looking for solutions to ineffective keyboard shortcuts. The whole title of that page should be re-written to say, in bold at top "Keyboard shortcuts AND shortcut problem troubleshooting" or something to that effect.
