I am unable log in on desktop

I am unable log in session I used command:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo reboot

untill my problem is no resolved

I am able to get log in screen But when i enter my password it doesn't log in I am using Ubuntu 11.10 Architecture-i 386 My notebook Toshiba C-0665-0125

I had type command startx after that isuue starts persist

after that I restart notebook and issue starts to persist.I able to login by root, But I do not get administrator access.Last week I am waiting for your answer
