Oops, this does not give me the classic behavior.

I want to select the window the mouse is in, not raise it. I want to be able to read what is in one window (on top, overlapping) and type in the second window.
This is the behavior in Ubuntu 10.04 and Gnome 2.30
In preferences->windows->Window Selection, I choose "Select windows when the mouse moves over them"

For example, with two windows overlapping with the first on top.
Placing the mouse pointer in the second window puts typing in the second window without raising it. The first window remains on top.
Placing the mouse pointer in the first window puts typing in the first window which remains on top.

How do I do this?
