How many RAM do you have ?
Could you run command "top" to see if a process takes much of the CPU.

Over time computers have got more powerful and as a result suppliers of operating systems such as Windows or Ubuntu have decided to make use of more resources to make the system look and feel better. This is OK provided your PC is up to it.

The minimum recommended system requirements can be found here.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

The new graphical environment Unity (introduced with 11.04 and possibly extended in 11.10) is more hungry than the old gnome desktop and will run slower.

Many people including my self actually prefer the old desktop. To give it a try when you get to the login screen select "Ubuntu Classic" from the drop down at the bottom of the screen. If you prefer it you can make this the default.

To make it the default from the top menu select "System">"Administration">"Login Screen". In the application that starts select "Unlock" enter your password and select "Ubuntu Classic" as default session.

If that does not solve your problems let us know the make and model of your PC and how much RAM and Disk space you have. From this we should be able tell if the performance you are getting is to be expected. In which case we advise on either upgrading your PC or changing to a less demanding version of Ubuntu such as LUbuntu.

If you PC has enough performance however then something is slowing it down and we can advise on how to investigate further.

thank you for helping me.
i opened my pc and found out that i have 2 units of 512mb ram but if i click on the systems info it only showed me 433.1mb of memory, the probable cause is one of the two memory is not working, so i think i will get one replaced and then see what happens.
i think i'm going to upgrade my ram instead
thank you so much for your help.
as we say here in the philippines" MABUHAY " to all. that means "long live"
