Installing server functions on Ubuntu Desktop

Asked by Marco

I have installed Ubuntu Desktop 11.10 and was told that I can also add the Ubunto server functions to it.

I am not a fan of looking at a command line screen all day and wanted to be able to use the Ubuntu server function while still having the Desktop Layout.

If you can help. I need step by step instructions.

Thanks

The server and desktop editions are very similar -- they largely simply have different selections of default packages.

What do you want to do?

What do you consider to be the basic functions of Ubuntu server?

You can install whatever services/daemons you want, just like in the server version. They both can use the same packages. If you want the server kernel, you can install that too (install the packages called linux-server and linux-image-server).

Please note also that there are good reasons to generally avoid running a GUI on a system that is being used as high-demand or highly critical server (though it is certainly OK to do so for many applications). And it is possible that you might prefer to start with an Ubuntu server system and install a GUI on it (but probably not, because it takes a lot longer to do that, and also because if it is reasonable to have a GUI installed, you probably do not need the server kernel). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ServerGUI for details pertinent to both these points.

Can you help with this problem?
