updated to 10.04 and lost destop icons can't drag fom applicatios or paces to desktop

I just upgraded from 9.1 to 10.04 and have now lost my icons off of my main desktop. I have tried to drag icons from applications and places but can not. How do I get my icons back?

You can drag from "Application" to upper bar.

My desktop actually came back after signing off and signing back on again
