My gnome not updated with distro update

Asked by greadey

I recently updated my distro to 10.1 (I think) from 8.10.

When starting firefox I get the old 8.10 home page and MY gnome was not updated, while my wife's was. To make things worse I tried enlightenment and lost all window decoration, switching back to gnome I have to run "metacity --replace" every time, but I am puzzled as to why MY gnome has not updated with distro. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling as much as I dare such as compiz, metacity but I guess I'll have to do a complete gnome reinstall but I'm worried I might break all my wife's settings. I've noticed in synaptic that the package "gnome" does not seem to be installed!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I am puzzled as to what to do next.

The gnome on the same system is the same. Your settings may be borked but the fact that another user on the same system is ok points to bad settings. If you make a new user, is that ok too?

Funnily enough - a new user does get the right gnome. I have backed up most of my stuff since I was going to delete my account and start again, but I am the "root" user and I thought about it and decided it was a last resort. So I suppose my question is narrowed down to - What settings do I need to look at?

if you add the new user to the admin group you can move

.gconf
.gnome2
.config

from the original user to a new folder then log in as your first user, you will get vanilla settings for your apps (except your browser etc (I assume Firefox)).

Should give you default settings and the new desktop.

Can you help with this problem?
