Gnome doesn't start, xterm only

I have deleted a critical something because Gnome won't start, only have a terminal screen. How can I repair the install?

Can you logon at the terminal? Is it only a black and white screen or do you see a scren with a mouse pointer too?

ok if you press ALT+F2 do you get a run dialogue? If so run:

nautilus

and the desktop should show.

login and then type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
