I've used network-manager-pptp for about a year, but now I use a text config file I found on the forum of my Internet provider, because it is boring to enter your password each time after reboot. But using text configs should not be recommended to non-professional users.
Another problem is that after connection to Internet with network-manager-pptp, I used to loose the routes to the local LAN. If I wanted simultanious access to LAN and Internet, I had to run a special script with routes. Now I wrote all routes into a text config file. Note that under Windows all routes obtained automatically via DHCP so no need to inscribe them specially.
Anyway, to set up a NM-free configuration I had to consult the Internet which would be impossible without NM-pptp.
