Is there an y software I can use in ubuntu for converting avi, mp4 or otherwise windows video media into a dvd format that will also allow me to burn the result in dvd format?

sudo apt-get install devede

it will default create you a ~/movie/movie.iso

file which you can throw on a disk with your favourite burning app, you can add little videos if you wish but you must click Adjust Disk image if the data is larger than the DVD so the devede can adjust quality to make the videos fit in the disk.
