If you dual boot it offers you a choice which OS to use. Choosing one does not affect the performance. The other(s) is/are not run.

If you install inside Windows, using Wubi, it is like a Windows application. It should not affect the performance any more than running Microsoft Office.

Thanks for the help. I think this one is much better. How much space should I apportion to Ubuntu? 3GB? 5GB? for installation?

Also is there anything you can do to 'see' in windows and viceversa?

4 Gb is required - 8Gb is recommended.

You can 'see' Windows from Linux read/write copy/paste etc

I have another question.

I have ubuntu as a dual OS on my laptop. I however cannot see the 'install' button when I try to install software in the 'software center.

It is better to put a new question than to ask a new question as a comment.
