Kubuntu grub bootloader out of order

Asked by Mark Finnan

First time user on Kubuntu using USB stick to download Kubuntu. I ran into a problem as I discovered that the Grub bootloader is out of sequence the program files. Had to reboot into Advanced options and repair boot to fix the problem. The download went fine but died at the splash screen, a look at my USB stick showed program files in 1st position with Grub boot loader in 2nd position. Downloaded from on Kubuntu webpage: https://kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/

I suggest filing a bug report.
Please use Apport to collect extra information for bug report.
Open terminal [ctl+alt+t] type: ubuntu-bug ubiquity
This will start Apport.
Bug report will be considered incomplete without using Apport.

1. You mistyped the package name, ubiquity with Q, not with G

2. You have to be aware that the developers need more information than what you have provided so far.
What exactly is "out of order" or "out of sequence"?
What exactly happens when you try booting?

For me it is not clear whether you have a problem when booting the Kubuntu installer, or if you see that problem after installing a Kubuntu system on the hard disk.

Another item missing is the information whether you downloaded the 20.04.3 or the 21.10 version

Dear Mr. Hampl, the above is a snap shot provided by Kinfo center. Thank you for your reply, I was able to engage ubiquity but it showed only today date (12/08/2021), is there a way to back date it? As I recall: I copied Kubuntu 20.04 LTS on to a USB stick and rebooted into USB for install of Kubuntu. The installation was normal as expected and files were copied to the hard drive. Rebooted the machine (with USB media removed) and the Kubuntu logo appears. It is at this point the boot procedure stops with no further action. I reran the coping of ISO files to the USB stick again and reran the downloading of the ISO with same results. I then examined the file content of the USB stick and using Gnome disk manager I found, /boot/efi file was in /dev/sda2, while the ISO file was in /dev/sda1. I rebooted the machine again and using the esc key where I was able to bring up the Kubuntu boot menu. Choosing Advanced Options then choosing repair boot, I was able to fix the problem. Root has written a crash report and Bin log file which I am unable to attach because of permissions.

"I reran the coping of ISO files to the USB stick"

How did you copy the ISO file to the USB stick? With a copy command or by using a special program (USB-creator, Rufus, Etcher, ...)?

If you have EFI enabled, then you need a separate EFI partition. The number sequence /dev/sda1 or /dev/sda2 does not matter,
