persistence on "live" pendrive

Asked by Rick Miller

I have a 3 part question: #1. Why is it only 4049(or so)Mb's is allocated on "live"O.S? #2. Any way to increase the size of persistence? #3. If I were to format to NTFS, could I still run "live" and use the entire allotment of the drive for persistence?
Reason for question(?) is with FAT32 format, I only get about 4049 mb's of persistence, that leaves just under 2 Gb's unusable on a 8Gb flashdrive.

It's 4Gb because the data files you are using are stored in FAT32 and this is the largest file size it can hold.

Formatting to NTFS won't help. You could partition the drive and write the image to the first partition, leaving free space for data.
Instead of the persistence you can install to the USB instead of an internal drive and use the whole space

Thank all for responding:

I may have been a bit misleading. Let's start over...what I want to accomplish--after creating a bootable "live" USB, I need to 'add persistence". Had major problems using Unetbootin, Pendrivelinux, Multiboot,,etc. solved those problems by using "Rufus" w/ dd instead of .iso. Now, what I wish to do is add "persistence" (after-the-fact) of creating a live USB. Hope this is a bit more understandable. I believe(?) I must create another partition and then create a casper-rw 'file"? or label the partition casper-rw....I'm not sure. Would love to be directed to the proper tutorial/steps to do this. I've been through many forums/web sites and searched many a topic related to "adding persistence, but it's not working, possibly because I've opted for dd instead of .iso, but IDK!!! Hope I've explained my intentions to your understanding(?). Reason I went to "live" instead of "install" was there were some who said "install" to a USB does not always work properly(???) I question, but am not going to argue.(full install WOULD solve the persistence issue, but would it (the O.S.) operate correctly?)

THANX:

Rick

This is an addendum to my above response...sorry for not including it. I've found this;...http://www.fabbnet.net/Live_Persistent.htm and wonder if this is the proper procedure??? for I don't want to do more "experimenting" that has lead to previous headaches/problems.
