unable to install kubuntu, only get konsole

Upon installation, booting from cdrom, I get the language preference request and then it continues and the result is no gui only the consol. I get the directory Desktop. The machine is an older Dell optiplex.

Have you tried the alternate install CD? Sometimes it works better ;-)

No I shall try that. I only tried the ubuntu cd but not the alternate install. I was interested in kubuntu and did not find an alternate install for it.

which version of Kubuntu did you tried? Here are the download links for Kubunt 8.10:

I downloaded the alternate iso for kubuntu as suggested above and I tried to install it.
I got a lot further however I did not get any gui, just the normal linux type login. It does boot from the hard drive but again only a text interface. Any suggestions?

I think you should search the bug database on launchpad or file a bug if you don't find a solution.
It's important to specify which hardware you use (especially your graphic-card) and which version of Kubuntu you are trying to run
