wired connection not working 16.04

I am new to using ubuntu. Have successfully installed a mini version with no problems (15.10) but on install of 16.04 (full version) my wired network connection disconnects often enough to not be useful. I have seen a lot of similar issues posted recently but not any solutions. I'm a little confused as to where to look for possible solutions to try. Can someone point me in the right direction?

It starts the network when cable is initially plugged in and after 10 seconds or so, it pops up with Disconnected - you are now offline.
