Error installing saucy on compaq CQ40

Asked by Vanamali

I wanted to install Ubuntu 13.10 on my Compaq CQ40 laptop (previously running 12.04). I downloaded the iso image and ran md5sum check. The output matched with the hash on the website. Hence burnt the image on to a USB stick and booted through it. On trying a live session, everything worked fine. When I tried to do a fresh installation (wiping out 12.04), the installation continued till the step where the system name, username, password etc are asked and then suddenly an error message appears and the procedure stopped. This has left the laptop unusable except for live sessions of 13.10 (/media, /mnt, /opt, /proc, /srv, /sys, /tmp and /home of 12.04 are empty).

I tried to burn the iso image of 12.04 onto a different USB stick, but the process of burning won't complete (says 'startup disk creator crashed').

I tried to burn 12.04 on to USB stick but my computer won't boot into it.

Is there a way to find out what went wrong with the iso image of saucy (Live session works fine.) ?

Is there a way to correct the error without burning fresh image?

Please help.

You don't burn data to a USB stick. You transfer it. USB storage uses magnetic media like your hard drive. You burn a CD as the laser used to put the data on the CD is significantly more intense than the laser to read it, literally etching the data into the CD surface.

Have you tested your RAM using Memtest on the USB?

Have you tried using unetbootin to transfer the ISO to the USB stick?

Have you tried a different USB port (Ideally not USB 3.0)?

Thanks

Sorry! By "burning" I was refering to "writing data" on to the USB.

I tried all the USB ports available. Didn't help. Used UNetbootin to transfer the ISO. On booting from the USB, a blue screen with only "Default" option came up. Apparantly, there was some error in the ISO image! Because, After downloading a fresh copy and transfering it to USB using UNetbootin, the installer worked smoothly. I'm provinding this information through the newly installed Saucy! Thank you very much.
