You don't need a driver for DVD drives in Ubuntu just like you don't need them in Windows.

What is the output of :

sudo lshw -C disk; sudo lshw -C drive; lsb_release -a; uname -a

Thanks

Where do I key this string in or how do I get a software update for this...I think I stopped one in progress so maybe that is my problem

Copy the command as one big command and press CTRL+ALT+T

You can then paste the file and hit ENTER. Type your password (You will get no feedback, but keep typing).

Copy the output and paste here as an update

Thanks

Install the DVD decoder as well as vlc then try playing a video dvd. The drive is seen.

Walt Chorle (walt-g) said : #7

ty very much being new to the linux things...how do i install the dvd decoder and the vlc? I need specifics since it is so new

Yes but not new to searching the web to find things out.....no?

Even the simplest search brings up this link:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs

You can use software centre to install vlc.

Can you help with this problem?
