infinite loop login 12.04

Asked by clayton clent

Hi,
Running 12.04 which crashed a few weeks ago while I was on the net. Displayed CLI initially. I have got back to the GUI, but am at the login page. I did not have to log in previously. When I enter my password the screen goes black for a couple of seconds and then comes back to the login page. If I enter an incorrect password, I get a red warning message, so I assume that I am entering the correct password when the looping occurs.
I can log in as a guest, but of course can't access my files.
Any help would be appreciated,

Clayton

If you drop to root recovery mode and run:

chown -R name:name /home/name

Obviously change 'name' for your username.

Then run:

reboot
