CD/DVD not detected by DVD ROM

Asked by mergr13

My CD-ROM is not detecting any DVD or CD. The external light blinks thrice as soon as I put a CD inside, and then no light at all. Referring to a similar post I tried
sudo lshw -C disk; sudo lshw -C drive; lsb_release -a

this was the output
          *-cdrom

Does it blink thrice also if you open and close with no cd?

Please post the output of :

lsb_release -a

Hi Hamish,
Yes it does blink the same way without cd. Here's the output for the command you mentioned

 No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
Release: 12.04
Codename: precise

In addition I have checked both the power as well as the data cable and it looks good

Okay, this isn't an issue with linux. Your drive isn't detecting the disk at all. Perhaps the lens is dirty. You could try rubbing it with a cotton swab (VERY GENTLY). Does the drive work in windows or other linux distros? If you do try the cotton swab be extremely careful as if you scratch the lens on your drive you'll ruin it.
