fresh install of ubuntu 13.04 won't boot

Asked by thorncs

I downloaded 13.04 live 64 via unetbootin onto a usb stick. It runs fine in the live environment so I tried to install it on the my hard drive ( amd 64 athlon processor) . When I try to boot into the system I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. To see what was going on I changed the from quiet splash in the boot menu to no mode set. It reports request_mode runaway loop modprobe and continually repeats tries to find usb drivers I think. I googled the request_mode thing and it seems this occurs when there is a conflict between a 32 bit system and a 64 bit system. I know my system is 64 bit and the iso I downloaded was 64 bit. Anybody no how to fix this?

Well, you could redownload to check the file wasn't corrupted, or you could actually try the 32-bit version on your system instead.
It might not run as quickly, but perhaps it's worth a try.

Hope this helps

Fixed the problem by reformatting the usb drive and reinstalling ubuntu 13.04 on to it with unetbootin. Apparently I had not reformatted the drive from a previous install of a 32 bit operating system and somehow those files were trying to creep into the new image.
