Asked by darknido

I want to put ubuntu on to my pc i have a intel i5 with 8gm ram with a 64gb ssd drive 320gb hdd drive, 500gb hdd drive.

I am running windows 8 64bit on the 64gb sdd drive. I want to put ubuntu on the 320gb or the 500gb drive but i don't want to use all of the drive for ubuntu.

What is the best min drive space i should use on the 320gb or 500gb drive.

Windows 8 was install using the non uefi option.

I don't want to put the sata mode in legacy mode.

There is no single best option, there are simply choices.

You will need to make at least 20Gb free for Ubuntu to be comfotable, more if you have lots of RAM as swap will need to equal your RAM size.

You know what is the best option for a non-power user ?

Well, my suggestion is:

Un-plug the SSD and HDD of 500GB from your PC. Then power ON your PC with CD/DVD or USB of Ubuntu and proceed with installation. Install Ubuntu automatically to 320GB HDD (this will be the only drive in you PC).

After the installation finish , Power OFF your PC and plug again the SSD and the other HDD (500GB). Boot to Ubuntu (from disk , not CD/DVD .. ) and open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and run this command

    sudo update-grub

The only thing you have to be aware of , is to set as first disk in BIOS (boot order) the disk with Ubuntu (320GB).

Done !

Do not partition the HDD 320GB manually , leave the Ubuntu's installer to do this automatically , and for extra safety un-plug (as I said) the other drives.

The EFI or Legacy BIOS mode, has nothing to do with the Drives (SSD , HDD). If your BIOS is in Legacy mode , then Ubuntu automatically will be installed in Legacy mode.
