How do I install 12.04LTS on sda3?

Asked by tomdean

I have an HP Envy 3D Laptop, Core I7 6 Core, etc.

Windows 7 is on sda1 and sda2.
FreeBSD on sda3
sdb is shared data and cannot be used.

Grub allows boot either windows 7 or FreeBSD.

I want to replace FreeBSD with 12.04LTS.

I have a DVD used to install 12.04 on another computer, so the DVD is good.

The installer does not seem to be able to allow this.

I looked at "do something else". I deleted the FreeBSD partition, but, so no way to use the free space.

Do I have to manually partition the disk?

Use the "something else" install option and set the partitions you want to use to be formatted and used for the mount points. If you already have a swap partition then you can share that between the Linux / BSD OSes. You only need one swap.

I case others want it.

In "something else"
1. delete freebsd partition (sda3)
2. create swap equal to memory size (8192 meg) from the free space
3. use the rest of the free space for linux with / as the mount point
4. continue
