Desktop is blank - no icons or menus

Asked by Tokir

I have a couple of issues. i don't know if they are inter-related or which takes precedence so I will list them both.

1. I installed ubuntu 12.4 from an iso dvd on a Windows 7 system. The first restart was fine, but when I tried to log out and go back to Windows, I didn't have access to the boot menu any more. Ubuntu loads automatically.

2. In the login window, I can see the cursor flashing in the password box, but as I type the password, the cursor moves, but I can't see anything being typed. Apparently, I am able to log in, but there are no icons, task bar or menus visible or available. I right-clicked to the settings and System info shows the version is now 11.10 and not 12.4.

I am hoping my Windows partition didn't get wiped out with a bad ubuntu upgrade. Any info/suggestions would be welcome.

If you press CTRL+ALT+T does a terminal appear? If so and you have web access, run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install xfce4
sudo reboot

You will now be fully updated. If you get no desktop then reboot and change to the XFCE session at the login screen. It will work.

Can you help with this problem?
