12.04 freezes on reboot after install

Asked by Steve McKenna

Hi all,
Having never used Linux before a lot of the answers confused me a little - I am a proper newb!!

I downloaded Ubuntu12.04 and burned it to CD. I did the trial use of ubuntu that seemed to work ok, but I did have to use the Nomodeset option to load it. I performed the installation from the Ubuntu trial desktop. I didn't create any partitions, I just went for it!! When it asked me to reboot which I did, it shut down, asked me to remove the CD and shut down. When it restarted then it froze on the purple screen with 5 lit dots and doesn't do anything else. I've seen a forum that told me to hit "e" when booting and replace $linuxgfxmode with nomodeset. This didn't do much and when I returned to that screen again it still said $linuxgfxmode.
I have the following:
AMD A4 3300 processor
AMD Radeon HD 6410D Graphics
4Gb RAM
It has not had a previous OS running on it and I am not looking for dual boot. Is anyone able to help please?

Cheers,
Steve

Try the boot option :

radeon.nomodeset=1

Hi,
Thanks for the quick answer! Where do I put this? In the same screen I got when I pressed "e"?

Sorry for being a bit thick...... :)

Not thick, just new.

Yes press E and delete the words:

quiet splash

and in it's place add the boot option. Once you get installed you can install the proprietary video driver and be ok.

Fantastic, that worked a treat!! All I have to do now is learn to work the terminal window :)

Thanks for your help

No worries. Learning to use the terminal is not essential but does benefit massively
