Could you please provide the system specifications of your computer, especially whether it was upgraded to windows 8 or did windows 8 come included (could be a difference because you may have bios or uefi).

I dont have it with me at the minute - its a dell inspiron 660 ,1tb hard drive 4 gb ram , i3 processor (3.4 ghz),4 gb ram,Windows 8 pre installed. I tried ubuntu 12.10 previously and used boot repair but that left me unable to access windows so i reformatted hard drive and windows 8 back on at the minute. It is uefi

I would recommend you back up your windows installation to another drive (system image in back up settings?, that was present in windows 7) so you can restore easily if things go wrong.
