Do you use VirtualBox or some other virtual machine program ?

If you use VirtualBox (Oracle) , you can mount a CD/DVD disk from section "Devices" and then see if k3b can detect it.

Thanks

This is actually a problem with your virtual machine. You must install VMware Tools on the guest OS and configure your machine settings to use the host dvd drive. It isn't that difficult you just need to do research and mess around with the settings. Anyways, this isn't actually an Ubuntu problem, so I suggest you go to a vmware forum or something if you need help. If you install the vmware tools though, you should be able to use the host's drives.
