Ubuntu 10.04 is almost End of Life (April 2013) so while it is still supported I would not recommend it as a new install: you will need to upgrade in a few weeks time.

I suggest you try Ubuntu 12.04 Precise download here
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

or Xubuntu 12.04 download here
http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/

Both of these are Long Term Stable releases so you wont wont need to upgrade any time soon. If you want the latest features you can install 12.10 but will need to upgrade sooner.

You can try both of these from a CD/DVD or live USB so you can decide which you prefer before installing. The same software is available for both, in the software centre, though they do have different applications installed by default. Ubuntu is more resource hungry than Xubuntu so may be a better choice if you have an older PC.

Give them a try, install the one you want, and if you have any problems ask here again.

Agree with @Warren Hill.

Do not install a version that will be EOL in a few months.

Also newer versions meaning.. newer kernel , better hardware support , newer software.. etc..

I suggest Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (support Until April 2017).

Thanks
